How We’re Cultivating Generosity Through The Modernist Donor-in-Movement Fund

We’re proud as peacocks to announce the launch of The Modernist Donor in Movement Fund at Seeding Justice, their first DMF started by a business!

And to announce the good news, we just had to throw a birthday party…

It’s our birthday tradition to practice generosity in public, with a hope to spark conversations around philanthropy and giving, and how we could move with more intention in the world. This year, for Modernist’s 7th (!) birthday, we wanted to go deeper, and Seeding Justice’s work immediately came to mind.

They are actively rethinking and innovating within another industry that could use fresh thinking: philanthropy. They reimagine philanthropy by funding grassroots efforts led by those most impacted by injustice.

In the early days of the pandemic, we were grateful to donate to their Oregon Worker Relief Fund to support agricultural workers in Oregon. During the recent attacks on our civil rights, we’ve supported the Oregon Reproductive Health Equity Fund, which expands access to reproductive health services to Oregonians most impacted by equity gaps. We are thrilled to be partnering with Seeding Justice on their first-ever DMF started by a business, and to participate in a scale of giving Georgia couldn’t have imagined when she founded the firm back in 2015!

What does this mean?

We’ve committed to donating 1% of our revenue to the Modernist Donor-in-Movement Fund, deepening our intention to impact racial wealth inequality. We see this as an act of reparations, and one way we can integrate justice and anti-racism work into how we operate. Our Generosity Plan commits to donating 3% of total revenue, and this structure allows us to create budgetary permission for giving while centering those most impacted by injustice.

About Seeding Justice’s Donor-in-Movement Funds!

What’s a Donor in a Movement Fund?

Donor-Advised Funds hold over $1 trillion in philanthropic limbo. Seeding Justice created an alternative: Donor in Movement Funds, which provide the same tax benefits, while ensuring nonprofits get their funds within 12 months, all while centering the voices of those most impacted by injustice.
