APRIL NEWSLETTER | How to use your time and cash to resist 47 ✊

Got market jitters? These days, we’re seeing political anxiety translate into folks’ feelings about the market. If you missed it, Georgia shared her thoughts on how to navigate the roller coaster of the past week. 🎥 Give it a watch!

Here’s how we’ve been guiding our clients: acknowledge your feelings, practice staying grounded, then make a plan to act on what you can control:

Do some cash flow spring cleaning, move money to a credit union or state bank (Georgia explained this move on So Money). Resist, build hope where you can, fight the current administration’s attempt to unwind our social safety net systems.

In solidarity and action,

Tax season is upon us…Remember to be kind to IRS workers and tax preparers! And until they stop messing with the IRS, we recommend you e-file and pay online.
On the blog, we shared a how-to for Calculating Taxable Income plus our 2025 Tax Reminders + Deadlines.

Bonus! Read our helpful breakdown of how withholdings work: make sure you don’t owe or have to wait for beleaguered IRS folks to process your return.

RESISTING 47’s POLICIES

💵 RESIST WITH YOUR DOLLARS 💵 We’re turning to Progressive Shopper to help us analyze where we’re shopping and the issues they do (or don’t) support, not just their donations. Check out why redirecting your spending is so critical and then try installing the widget in your web browser!

🕝 RESIST WITH YOUR TIME 🕝 What if we could give an hour per week to save our democracy? We’re taking inspiration from one of our clients who has been attending Fridays at 4 with Indivisible, a virtual opportunity to gather with like-minded citizens who take action to write, calls, and emails for justice.

Most states have an Indivisible chapter (or find another org). If it works for you, choose a meeting and set it to recur on your calendar!

From the Team

More good news for our downtown!

Artist Mike Bennett is opening a permanent installation for kids right down the street from Modernist HQ.

Join us in challenging 47’s smear campaign against Portland’s 100 days of BLM protests - come downtown, shop, eat some sushi, bring the kids!

MODERNIST TAKES IT OUTSIDE

“There’s a lot that’s outside of our control, but there’s also a lot of things we *can* do.

Georgia talked to Charlotte Cowles of New York Magazine’s The Cut about how to manage the current political moment and prepare for the possibility of a recession. Read on for actionable takeaways! ⚡️

In a recent conversation with Farnoosh for So Money, Georgia shared what we’re advising clients to do in the face of possible banking deregulations and how ancestral money stories can inform our actions today:

“We talk a lot about discovering our money stories and this is a quintessential money story: what are the behaviors we’ve inherited or heard about from our family that helped them survive?

FUND YOUR HEROES

Commit to giving more, faster, and using trust-based practices. This call from the MacArthur Foundation reminds us that we need to keep money flowing, especially with federal funding being cut across programs from environmental protections to arts and culture.

They’re raising their baseline payout to grantees to six percent and inviting other foundations to do the same. Says author John Palfrey: “Artificial scarcity will create a crisis, but only if we let it.”

A SONG THAT’S REALLY ABOUT GENEROSITY

Chappell Roan’s “The Giver”

You know we’re all about generosity over here, and Chappell Roan’s “The Giver” is the anthem we need right now! We eagerly await each personal reinvention with different costumes, hairstyles, and cultures.

'Cause you ain't got to tell me

It's just in my nature

So take it like a taker

'Cause, baby, I'm a giver
